Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury was a famous politician in Bangladesh. He was associated with Bangladesh Awami League. As a member of the ‘Jatiya Sangsad’, he worked as a representative for the Chittagong-12 Constituency. Babu was also a freedom fighter in the War of Liberation. He was an incredible leader with unique principles and qualities. Babu was a leader who had good intentions and genuine love for his country.
Where it all began
Akhtaruzzaman has always been captivated by politics. From a young age, he was affiliated with politics. Even as a student, he was involved with Bangladesh Chatra League. Babu’s official journey commenced in 1970 during the liberation war. He organized the “Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra” in Chittagong during the war.
He was also elected as Provincial Assembly for East Pakistan from Anwara-West Patia. He also played a vital role in leading the historic Chittagong movement. His contribution in organizing the Awami League after 1975 was commendable. Later in 1977, he was elected President of the South Chittagong District unit of the Awami League. He was appointed three times as a Bangladesh Awami League candidate in the Parliament from Chittagong-12 in 1986, 1991, and 2008. He served as the President of the South Chittagong District unit of the Awami League till his death.
What Politics meant to Akhtaruzzaman
As per Akhtaruzzaman, politics was the means of greater human welfare. Through his political journey, he always worked against corruption. Babu was against the whole concept of violent politics. Despite getting greedy and corrupt, he chose to stay honest and authentic to himself and the country. Babu admired Bangabandhu and followed all his ideals and values in his political life. He always worked for his government and its betterment. Akhtaruzzaman was active in other fields too, but politics gave him satisfaction. He loved identifying himself as a politician.
Babu was a politician who succeeded even in the Industrial Sector
Akhtaruzzaman did not contribute only to the political sector but also to the business sector. He was engaged in business activities way before independence. Afroza Oil Mill, Asif Steel Mill, Asif Synthetics, etc., are some of his successful businesses. Out of which, His most remarkable venture is The United Commercial Bank Limited. He is the founding chairman of The United Commercial Bank Limited (UCBL). It is one of the second largest private banks in Bangladesh. Akhtaruzzaman led UCBL to become one of the most successful banks in Bangladesh. Akhtaruzzaman did not provide benefits to the political area but also to the industrial area of Bangladesh.
He was a kind and selfless politician
Akhtaruzzaman was one of those politicians who thought about the country first, then about himself. To him, everyone was equal irrespective of their class, gender and wealth. He never prioritised profit and gave massive importance to the wellbeing of the people. He built various educational institutions and mosques in different areas. He was constantly involved in charities and social activities. He was one of the rare politicians who utilised his power to help the people.
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury was a valuable asset in the political part of Bangladesh. He dedicated himself to his country and worked for it till his last day. To this day, everyone remembers, admires and mourns him. The reason behind his popularity is the numerous things and accomplishments he has done and achieved. After him, there had not been another great leader like him, which explains the recognition, he still has.
